This is why there need to be more female writers and more female head writers. I had a feeling it was going to be the Marge problem because she’s actually why I didn’t want to watch that show even as a kid. I think though there’s an episode where she’s a bad romance author? That one was kinda awesome in this respect.
But, I totally get where your mom’s coming from. I’ve been turned off of so many shows because the clearly male writers think it’s funny to depict a woman dismantling her personhood in order to keep her family together. And it’s just not. It’s deeply tragic. These female characters need just a little tweak to make them funny and believable. Like if Marge was secretly getting her JD or carrying on a fulfilling lesbian relationship on the side or something and the joke was that Homer expected this spectacular woman to just stay home for him. But yeah, instead she’s just always forgiving his shenanigans.
This is actually why I encouraged my mom to leave my father. He didn’t appreciate her and he just sort of expected her to do for him. I do actually think they were originally in love, but she gave up everything for him and for me and my brother when if he had just been a little more attentive or a better husband and father she would have gotten further in her career and we all would have been better off.
I wonder if men understand what they’re depriving themselves of with this selfish behaviour so many of them seem to exhibit.
