I'm still on Michelle Obama's "When they go low, we go high," but I do entirely understand why people run very quickly out of patience. As for Lincoln ... if he had lived I think we would currently have a much more inclusive culture in the United States. There were so many concessions to the defeated confederacy which essentially nullified the rights and even personhood of the newly liberated and while I won't pretend that Abraham Lincoln wasn't a product of his own time his writings did indicate that he would not have capitulated to the degree that Andrew Johnson did. I'm not going to go so far as to say it was a mistake to make Johnson his VP because had he lived it would have been absolutely fine, but he picked Johnson just about as a concession which meant that when the time came Johnson ... almost erased the progress so many people had died for. At least, that's my take on it. I'm hardly an expert in the area.
