Trigger Warning: this article will discuss child abuse, rape and hate.

For ages I’ve been trying to figure out how to approach Fundamentalist Christianity and how it uses institutionalized racism to build and maintain structures of racist power. But given there are entire books on the subject and I’m — you know — white this may not be my story to tell particularly in a Medium post. But what I can talk about is misogyny in Christianity, how that exists as a power structure, and how it bleeds into the rest of society.

I was raised Catholic. So, I had early exposure to this. And while the church I belonged to was not overtly and intentionally hateful it took years of deprogramming before I understood I was actually a person deserving of love and hope. And yeah, that should read as super super dark. Catholics basically drilled into me that as a woman I didn’t get to have my own life. Boys were encouraged to have careers and become leaders. Girls who displayed any intelligence or leadership skills or athleticism were shamed for it. And Lord help you if you were non-binary, trans, or gender fluid. Within Christianity, those identities aren’t just bad; they don’t exist.
